HUMAN INTEREST PHOTO STORY ON THE IMPACT OF UNSAFE ABORTION IN MOMBASA COUNTY
Economic and Social Rights Centre (Hakijamii) is a national Non-Governmental Organization founded in 2004 and duly registered in 2007. The Organization works with marginalized communities in Kenya to support them claim and realize their Economic and Social Rights through advocacy, research, community organizing and public interest litigation whilst partnering with Governments, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), the private sector and Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs). The Organization has four thematic areas being Land & Housing, Education & Litigation, Water, Health & Sanitation as well as Policy Research & Budgeting.
Background of the Project
Under the Health Program, the Organization is running a project entitled ‘Reproductive Health and Rights Alliance’ in Mombasa County whose goal is to contribute towards the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality by safeguarding pertinent constitutional gains that allow access to safe abortion services in Kenya. The objectives of the project are to champion legal and policy reforms to safeguard constitutional gains on abortion as well as to spearhead opposition mitigation on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
To realize the goal and objectives of the project, the Organization seeks to conduct a research through use of photo-essay methodology on the impact of unsafe abortion in Mombasa County. The research shall be undertaken by way of “listening” as communities tell their own stories and experiences of unsafe abortions which shall then be compiled into a photo essay story by the Consultant. The human stories on unsafe abortions shall be used as a means of creating awareness and enhancing public discourse to change perceptions on safe abortions.
The Consultant is expected to gather community evidence through primary and secondary research and use of photos to build a solid and compelling photo-essay which shall inform legal and policy review on safe abortion.
The Consultant will be required to submit a well-researched human interest photo story on the impact of unsafe abortion in Mombasa County and recommend practical solutions to the challenges identified which shall be verified by the community and disseminated thereafter.
