Earlier this year, Hakijamii organized a meeting with Kwale residents to provide a platform for community members to discuss and share their proposals on the budget estimates for the year 2018/19. The meeting was attended by county officials, civil society groups and the mining host communities.
The forum encompassed discussions on Kwale county budget priorities,trend analysis for Kwale county budgeting , discussions ,sharing and submission of the budget proposals for the year 2018/2019.The forum was involved in three sessions .The first session focused on overview of Kwale County Budget ,updates from Kwale County Offical and lastly on the discussions and presentation of the budget proposals for the year 2018/2019.This was ensured through active participation from the community members who gave their proposals and justified on the importance of the projects to there communities. The key achievement from the forum is that members of the community were able to identify, discuss and present projects that are beneficial to their communities and document it for submission to the County government through a petition.
Through the meeting, the following achievements were observed:
- Increased understanding of the importance of public participation, county budgeting process and budget tracking skills by the mining host communities.
- Developed and prepared a written proposal of special socio-economic programmes for Bwiti, Nguluku and Kibwaga villages.
- Agreed to submit written proposals of special socio-economic programmes to the relevant Kwale County Government offices for consideration in the financial year 2019/2020
