On Tuesday, 29th January 2019, Hakijamii through the Housing Coalition (which is comprised of 13 organizations) submitted an oral and written memorandum on the Urban Housing Renewal and Regeneration Policy.
Some of the issues that arose include:
i. One of the mandates of the County Government as provided by the 4th schedule of the Constitution of Kenya is to collect County statistics. It is clear that Nairobi County should collect its own statistics or risk using outdated information as seen in the draft Urban Housing Renewal and Regeneration Policy.
ii. There should be the provision of safe and secure pedestrian and bicycle lanes to promote non-motorized transport in all building designs and plans.
iii. The policy should clearly define the role of the County Government in regulating the private sector.
iv. The policy should provide for an efficient Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanism since there will always be disagreements.
