The Lamu Port, South Sudan, Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET) is the largest and most ambitious infrastructure development project in Eastern Africa. The project connects Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia. It is made up seven (7) main development projects: 32 Berth port at Lamu; 3 resort cities ; interregional Highways; crude oil pipeline; product Oil Pipeline; interregional Standard Gauge Railway; Multi-Purpose High Grand Falls Dam along Tana River.
One of the biggest challenges on LAPSSET has been on access to information. For instance, it is not clear to Garissa County residents on how the compensation will be conducted and it’s also reported that the initial project coordinates were changed but the people likely to be affected have not been informed accordingly. These projects will definitely be implemented considering that some of the flagship projects have been completed such as the Isiolo International Airport and some berths at the Lamu Port.
In order to create awareness on LAPSSET projects and their social and economic impact, Hakijamii held a three day training in Garissa County.
