Hakijamii conducted the study on “The tension on human rights and development; The case of LAPSSET in Isiolo County” in May 2017 with the main aim of examining how implementation of the LAPSSET Corridor Project has affected the economic and socio-cultural rights of the locals living along the corridor in Isiolo County. The study was conducted in five selected areas in Isiolo County namely: Isiolo Airport, Kambi Garba, Ngaremara, Kulamawe and Garbatula. These areas were selected because they are the sites that were affected by the projects and also experienced some resistance from community members.
As a follow up, we recently held a two day sensitization forum in Merti and Biliqo which are in the outskirts of Isiolo County. The participants of the meetings were sensitized on the findings and recommendations of the research report. They thereafter informed us that they took part in a camel caravan thrice comprising of residents of Isiolo, Laikipia and Samburu with the aim of being informed how the LAPSSET Corridor Projects will benefit them and about the Crocodile Jaw generally. They then submitted a memorandum to NEMA and the Governor of Isiolo County demanding to be shown the EIA Report of the Project. In line with one of the recommendations of the research report, the participants of both Merti and Biliqo formed a Community Neighbourhood Land Monitoring Network (CNLMN) consisting of a male and female, youth, women representatives, two religious leaders (Muslim & Christian) and two clan elders to sensitize their neighbours on the LAPSSET Project and also will lead the community in demanding for their rights.
