Hakijamii held a multistake holder forum inviting relevant partners including Water Resource Management Authority and Isiolo Water Sewerage Company. This was important in linking the community members with key duty bearers to carry forward conversations on access to water and sanitation.
During the meeting a representative from Water Resource Management Mr. George Karichu got an opportunity to explain the role of Water Resource Management (WARMA). He also provided an opportunity for the members to raise their concerns and debunk the accusations of WARMA diverting water from the Isiolo river to the new Isiolo airport. Community members had a chance to ask questions and share the information they had heard regarding the Isiolo river. The river is the main source of water for the communities in terms of farming, water for their animals and domestic use. Water use conflict had resulted due to blockage of the water by those residing upstream. The most affected villages include Kambi Odha, Kambi Garbo, Alamach, Kilimani, Kambi ya Juu and Mwangaza among others.
A representative from Isiolo Water Sewerage Company also had a chance to explain the role of the organization and answer questions from the Isiolo residents on their water use.
With the ongoing LAPPSET project anticipated to pass through Isiolo County, creation of an enabling environment of dialogue is needed to ensure the communities access their basic services like water and sanitation.
