Masai Village informal settlement in Parklands was invaded on 4th October 2016 morning at 5 am by alleged hired goons with the objective of forcefully evicting residents of the settlement. This resulted in to a confrontation with majority of the residents sustaining deep cuts on their heads, arms and legs with others suffering from broken limbs.
In conjunction with the social movements, the community members managed to arrest four of the gang leaders who were handed over at the Parklands Police Station. Further statements were recorded by the complainants and entries made in the police observation book. The assaulted also duly filled the P3 form and we are optimistic that the aggressors will be prosecuted accordingly.
Cases of forced evictions are on the rise despite the president assent to the Land Laws Amendment Act 2016 detailing the procedures of carrying out humane evictions. Masai Village and as witnessed in Mombasa on 3rd October 2016 is an indication of the high levels of impunity this is meted with. Forced evictions are beginning to gain traction and are something we need to keep an eye on.
